Camping is one of my family’s favorite things to do during the summer. Leave the electronics at home and spend the day from morning to night outside. It really is one of the last places kids can go and just play like kids.

One of the easiest campfire dinners to quickly eat so the kids can get back to playing? Hot dogs.

On our last family camping trip we discovered a fun, new way to cook hot dogs: over the campfire and wrapped in bacon. It gave the hot dogs a smokey flavor that was just so good, and bacon makes everything better! The bacon adds such a nice crunch to the hot dog, especially when you cook them over a campfire. SO good.

Y’all – the kids could NOT wait to eat them, and I loved making them! This campfire hot dog recipe has become an instant favorite!

HOW TO MAKE BACON WRAPPED HOT DOGS

Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs Recipe - Happy Money Saver (4)

Spread about 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard evenly on one side of each slice of raw bacon.

Wrap each piece of bacon around a hot dog, Dijon side touching inside/against the hotdog spiraling it around the hot dog to the other end. Secure each end with a toothpick skewered all the way through the bacon and the hot dog.

Repeat until all the hot dogs are bacon wrapped and secured.

Trim toothpicks of sharp edges if desired, leaving a little bit showing so you remember they are there after cooking and remove.

Make Them Right Now

  • Place each hotdog onto a skewer if grilling. If using wood skewers, soak in water 6-12 hours first.
  • Preheat your grill to low heat. Or if using coals, light them and wait about 10 minutes until they are ready for heating. Make sure you are not too close to the heat, you want to cook them low and slow to avoid burning the bacon.
  • Place your hot dogs on a lightly greased, hot grill and cook, turning often until bacon is cooked chewy or crispy, about 10 minutes. Bacon grease will drip causing fires so watch them carefully and turn often.

How to Make Ahead & Freeze Them

  • Flash freeze your bacon wrapped dogs by placing in freezer on a baking sheet lined with parchment.
  • Freeze one hour or until frozen solid, then transfer to a gallon sized freeze safe bag, being careful not to let the toothpicks poke holes in bag.
  • Seal and freeze.

How to Cook over the Campfire

Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs Recipe - Happy Money Saver (6)
  • Your campfire should have been going for a while so that you have a nice 1-2 inch layer of hot & ready white coals.
  • If you are using briquettes, light them and wait about 10 minutes until they are not flaming and starting to turn white.
  • For best results use a lightly greased grate over the coals about 2 – 4 inches above them.
  • Place your hot dogs on the hot grill and cook, turning often until bacon is cooked chewy or crispy, about 10 minutes.
  • Bacon grease will drip causing fires so watch them carefully and turn often to avoid burning.
  • If using over an open flame or campfire, put bacon wrapped dogs on roasting sticks and cook, turning often until bacon is cooked, about 7-8 minutes.
