📋 Ingredient Notes

  • Blueberry juice: You should be able to find some at the grocery store under the R.W. Knudsen brand. You can use leftovers in smoothies or as a fun way to flavor plain sparkling/seltzer water! If you can't find any, you could also make this a frozen blueberry margarita by using frozen blueberries.
  • Cointreau: Cointreau is an orange-flavored liqueur. You can also substitute with Triple Sec, but note that Cointreau is typically a bit stronger in terms of ABV.
  • Silver/blanco tequila: Silver tequila is not aged (like añejo tequila), so it's a milder and more palatable option for these refreshing blueberry margaritas. Don't worry about splurging - since you're not drinking it straight, you don't have to use a top shelf tequila here.
  • Lime juice: freshly squeezed always makes a huge difference in homemade co*cktails. Skip the stuff from the can!
  • Agave: we always have agave on hand for co*cktails, desserts, vinaigrettes and more, but you can easily sub with simple syrup if preferred. You could even use maple syrup or honey in this blueberry margarita for a more intense flavor.

🔪 Step-by-step Instructions

(1) Fill a co*cktail shaker halfway with ice. Add 4 oz blueberry juice, ¾ oz lime juice, 1.5 oz tequila, and ½ oz Cointreau to the ice-filled shaker. Pour in ½ oz agave or simple syrup.

(2) Shake for about 15 seconds. Pour blueberry margarita mixture over ice and garnish with a sprig of fresh mint, a few slices of lime, and some fresh blueberries.

💭 Expert Tips and FAQs

  • Shake well: Be sure to shake the blueberry margarita mixture thoroughly, especially if you elect to use agave instead of simple syrup, as it can stick to the ice or to the sides of the shaker when it's poured in.
  • Alcohol choices: Cointreau or triple sec will work well, and don't feel the need to use your best tequila in this blueberry margarita. Since this is a mixed drink, the cheaper stuff will do.
  • Feel free to modify: In the event you can't find blueberry juice, you can try this co*cktail with other sweet and tart juices, like pomegranate, cranberry or cherry.

Great recipe. I use Knudsen's blueberry in many blueberry co*cktails including my blueberry lemonades..

But please, ignore the line that you don't need to use top-shelf tequila. That's an old myth that I hate. If you want a drink to taste as good as it can, use better liquor. It's a simple rule. If the other ingredients are covering up the flavor of the liquor, then you need to adjust your balance of ingredients. In the best co*cktails, you should be able to identify every ingredient. You also won't run the risk of getting a headache from the cheap liquor. I guarantee, if you use Casamigos or Olmeca Altos instead of Montezuma or Cuervo Especial, you WILL taste a difference and have a better tasting co*cktail.
