The Message

18God said, "It's not good for the Man to be alone; I'll make him a helper, a companion." 19So God formed from the dirt of the ground all the animals of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the Man to see what he would name them. Whatever the Man called each living creature, that was its name. 20The Man named the cattle, named the birds of the air, named the wild animals; but he didn't find a suitable companion.

21God put the Man into a deep sleep. As he slept he removed one of his ribs and replaced it with flesh. 22God then used the rib that he had taken from the Man to make Woman and presented her to the Man. 23The Man said, "Finally! Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh! Name her Woman for she was made from Man." 24Therefore a man leaves his father and mother and embraces his wife. They become one flesh.

New King James Version

18And the Lord God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him." 19Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.

21And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23And Adam said: "This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." 24Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

New Living Translation

18Then the Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him." 19So the Lord God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. 20He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him.

21So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man's ribs and closed up the opening. 22Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man. 23"At last!" the man exclaimed. "This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh! She will be called 'woman,' because she was taken from 'man.'" 24This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.
