The JSE hosted a Sustainability Showcase over the last couple of days, including insightful presentations from issuer representatives and other sector experts. The Showcase reinforced the increasing importance of sustainability and ESG considerations for corporates and institutional investors. There were many interesting insights, including a session focusing on natural capital assets facilitated by Kelvin Massingham from FSD Africa. He highlighted that 62% of Africa’s GDP is moderately or highly dependent on nature. In South Africa that number is 80%. This emphasizes the need for increased focus on nature-based solutions, in the same way that we are now focusing on renewable energy to address the current energy constraints in South Africa, and the broader climate crisis. These efforts are now buttressed by the COP15 Global Biodiversity Framework and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), amongst others.

🌱 "Sustainability" is a hard-to-define concept because it encompasses everything and is timeless per its definition. "Innovation" is equally mysterious, but like sustainability, the challenge in defining it succinctly lies in its potential to blend diverse and even contradictory concepts, taking something that was previously unknown (or below our awareness radar) and making it tangible. Having examples of "innovation" as a reference point (either in practice or empirically) can help us to better understand it, creating clearer connections that resonate with our mental models and mindsets.
