This awe-inspiring geological wonder traces its origins back to around 270 million years ago when it began as a lowland basin where sediments from the Rocky Mountains initially accumulated.

Interestingly, the pointed summits of these unique rock structures are known as “Buttes” in English, with notable examples including Elephant Butte, Camel Butte, West and East Mitten Buttes, Merrick Butte, Three Sisters, and Totem Pole. Each of these formations offers exceptional photo opportunities, so be sure to keep your camera handy to capture the stunning scenery.
Monument Valley – A Symbol of the Wild West
Monument Valley is renowned for its rich history as a backdrop for numerous iconic movies. Well-known films such as “Once Upon a Time in the West” and “Easy Rider” utilized this breathtaking landscape in the late 1970s. Director John Ford was particularly enamored with Monument Valley, frequently selecting it as the setting for his Western films, including collaborations with actor John Wayne, for whom he shot a total of nine films in this location.
As a tribute to Ford’s contributions, the area surrounding the Table Mountains has affectionately become known as “John Ford Country.” In fact, there is a prominent landmark named after him called “John Ford’s Point,” which can be found in front of Merrick Butte. Monument Valley continues to be highly sought-after for filming, with one of the most recognizable examples being the iconic Marlboro cowboy advertisem*nts.
To fully appreciate the striking table mountains and monoliths, embarking on the famous Scenic Drive is highly recommended. This 17 mi (27 km) route guides you to some of the valley’s most breathtaking viewpoints. If you prefer not to venture out in your rental car or are interested in a guided experience, you have the option to book one of the Simpson’s Trailhandler Tours, which are regularly available in the area.

The Home of the Indians
The history of Monument Valley is deeply rooted in the legacy of the Anasazi Indians, who initially settled in the area approximately 1,500 years ago. For a significant duration, they called rock caves their homes, and evidence of their presence endures in the form of captivating paintings and carvings adorning the rock walls. However, the Anasazi Indians mysteriously vanished before the arrival of the first European settlers.

In contemporary times, the region encompassing Monument Valley is an integral part of the Navajo Nation, home to the second-largest Native American population in the United States. The land is still inhabited by an estimated 300 Navajo individuals.

At Goulding’s Lodge, you can enjoy evenings with barbecue feasts accompanied by live music, campfires, and traditional dancing, all set against the backdrop of the starry desert sky.
