Storm causes "significant" SMUD equipment damage
Sunday's storm event caused widespread damage in Northern California, including here in the Sacramento Valley.
SMUD said the high winds, which at times exceeded 65 miles per hour, resulted in more than 70 power poles being knocked down. Additionally, more than 430 wires were downed, most of which were due to toppled trees falling on them.
The utility company said there were more than 110 job sites in its coverage area "that require complex tree work before repairs can be made."
At its peak, Sunday's SMUD power outage left more than 200,000 customers in the dark. As of the publishing of this update, SMUD said 93% of customers had power restored. Just more than 14,000 customers remained without power countywide as of 10:30 p.m. Monday, according to SMUD's online outage map.
SMUD said it has more than 80 crews working around-the-clock to assess the damage and get power restored as quickly as possible.
